Dear Council Members, Colleagues, Students, and Alumni, Sichuan Quake: Continuing Support for Relief and Reconstruction The earthquake that wreaked havoc in Sichuan has to date taken a toll of over 68,000 lives. All of us become increasingly saddened as casualty figures continue to climb. 68,000 is more than just a figure. Before the disaster struck on 12 May, it represented real, throbbing human lives. Likewise, Dujiangyan, Mianyang, Beichuan, and Yingxiu are not merely dots on a map but homes to thousands. The suffering that has been inflicted on the quake victims is beyond words. Many have lost their loved ones, their homes and practically everything they had. To encourage members of the University community to contribute to disaster relief, the University set up a relief fund account immediately after the quake. By 28 May, donations totalling HKD 1,288,200 were raised. We are most appreciative of the philanthropy of the donors. To provide timely relief is only the first step. The reconstruction of affected areas calls for sustained efforts on a massive scale. The University has already forwarded the funds raised to the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong, but will continue to accept further donations on behalf of the victims through its special account at the Hang Seng Bank (account number 293-005005-022). A website named 'A Campus That Cares' (www.cuhk.edu.hk/iso/chinaearthquake) will also be set up soon to provide updated information on what has been and will be done by the campus community for the earthquake victims. We look forward to your continued support for our efforts in this direction. And for all those who are worried about the safety of the CUHK student previously reported missing in Sichuan, there is good news. We have finally got in touch with him and confirmed his safety.
